Dr. Ir. Teuku Alvisyahrin, M.Sc

Tentang Saya (About Me)

Teuku Alvisyahrin received a BS in Soil Science from Syiah Kuala University, Indonesia in 1986. Supported by USAID, he pursued a Masters degree in Agronomy/ Soil Fertility Management at the University of Arkansas, USA which was completed in 1991.  In 1992 he was awarded a European Community Scholarship for ASEAN Scholars to undertake a one-year certificate training in Cartography and GIS at Ecole National des Sciences Geographiques - Insitut Geographique Nationale, France. He obtained his Doctoral degree in Crop, Soil, and Environmental Sciences from the University of Arkansas, USA in 2004.  He became involved in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) activities in 2007 and joined the Tsunami and Disaster Mitigation Research Center (TDMRC) at Syiah Kuala Unversity as the Head of Professional Services Division.  In 2008, he completed a United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UN-ISDR) Comprehensive Tsunami Disaster Prevention Training in Tsukuba, Japan.  As a member of the Indonesian Delegation to the 2nd and 3rd Global Platform on DRR conventions organized by UN-ISDR in Geneva in 2009 and 2011, he helped introduce TDMRC’s role in strengthening DRR programs in Indonesia to the UN System and international organizations.  In 2011 he led and coordinated a multi-agency team of Indonesian disaster risk management experts who conducted a preliminary assessment of coastal hazards and vulnerability for the coast of Oman. He developed a course titled “Institutional Partnership in Disaster Mitigation” for the Graduate Program in Disaster Sciences at Syiah Kuala University and has taught the course since 2011.  He also occasionally speaks or lectures on disaster recovery and risk reduction at national and international conferences or university fora. At the Faculty of Agriculture, he teaches undergraduate courses, i.e., Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition, Soil and Water Management, Soil Classification, Soil and Water Pollution, and Soil Chemistry. On the DRR side, his areas of research interest include post-disaster assessment, community resilience and recovery, local governance, and legal and institutional framework for DRR, whereas on the Soil Science/ Agronomy discipline, these areas include soil fertility evaluation, use of by-products as soil amendments, soil and water pollution, and renewable-energy crops.  He is a member of Soil Science Society of America, American Society of Agronomy, Soil Science Society of Indonesia, Global Risk Forum, and The International Emergency Management Society.
